UN urges countries to ban fossil fuel advertising

The global temperature has hit a record high for 12 consecutive months. The United Nations called on countries to take swift action to ban fossil fuel advertising.
In a speech at the American Museum of Natural History, UN Secretary-General Guterres described human behavior that destroys the earth and causes global warming as dangerous as the meteor that caused the extinction of dinosaurs.
Data from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service showed that last month was the hottest May on record, and the temperature hit a record high for 12 consecutive months. The global average temperature from June last year to May this year was 1.63 degrees Celsius higher than the pre-industrial average.
Guterres said that the fossil fuel industry is the ancestor of climate warming, and he called on countries to ban the advertising of fossil fuel companies, just as they ban advertising of products that are harmful to human health, such as tobacco. He also reiterated that the profits of this industry should be taxed to combat global warming.
He said that global carbon emissions must be reduced by 9% each year before 2030 to ensure that the temperature rise remains within 1.5 degrees.
