Putting on roller skates, the 11-year-old twin sisters transformed themselves into a heroic figure as they performed at the National Day Parade. Their similar appearances stumped their coaches and teammates.

This year, a total of 593 young people participated in the pre-parade, from five primary and secondary schools, the Singapore Gymnastics National Training Centre and Swift Skating Academy Singapore.

11-year-old Lee Yun Ying and Lee Yun Xuan are both students of the Singapore Inline Skating Academy. They performed together in the prelude of the National Day Parade.

They said that their classmates often cannot tell them apart. Their coaches and teammates also had the same difficulty in this performance, but they pointed out that they are of different heights and have different facial features.

When they were interviewed by Channel 8, they were nervous and shy at first, but they were reborn once they put on their roller skates and were heroic when they galloped on the road.

Lee Yun Xuan injured her foot more than a month ago and had to be in a cast. She could not rehearse for three weeks, but she still came to watch in a wheelchair during her injury to cheer up her teammates. Fortunately, she recovered before the first National Education Performance.

The two are in Grade 5 of Primary School this year. They were particularly excited when they saw their classmates come to watch the National Education Performance.

The youngest performer started learning roller skating at the age of four

The youngest performer at this year's National Day Parade is six-year-old Wang Enxu, who is also from Swift Skating Academy Singapore.

At the beginning of the prelude to the parade, about 20 inline skating athletes "slid" into the performance venue on the large lawn in front of the City Hall. Their movements were so skillful and consistent that it was hard to imagine that there was a six-year-old child among them.

Wang Enxu said that he started learning inline skating at the age of four, and then his parents let him take competitive courses.

Talking about his feelings about participating in the National Day Parade performance this time, he said: "I like the feeling of roller skating on the road, feeling the wind blowing on my face, and hearing the applause from the audience."

National gymnastics sisters join hands to perform

Since 1997, every fifth grade student can watch the National Education Performance at the National Day Celebration, but the fifth grade students in 2020 and 2021 were unable to attend due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zhou Tingyu, a 15-year-old national gymnast who is in Primary 5 in 2020, was very sorry for this. This time, she and her 17-year-old sister Zhou Yujia volunteered to participate in the National Day performance, performing with seven teammates from the Singapore Gymnastics National Training Center.

"Last year, my family got tickets to the celebration, so I went to watch the performance for the first time. This year I am honored and excited to participate in the performance."

Zhou Tingyu and Zhou Yujia are currently studying at the Singapore Sports School. In addition to being busy with schoolwork and domestic and international competitions on weekdays, they have to spend a whole day rehearsing every Saturday, but neither of them feels tired, and they will persist even if the sun is scorching.

Zhou Yujia said that they pay great attention to sun protection, and they will also make sure to drink two two-liter bottles of water every rehearsal to replenish water.

The sisters have been involved in gymnastics since they were seven or eight years old, and started to compete abroad at the age of ten. They are sisters, teammates, and competitors.

The two participated in four local gymnastics competitions together in 2022, but they said that even if they competed closely during this period, it was healthy competition and they would give each other advice.
