Some baby rockers, walkers and toys sold on two major local e-commerce platforms were found to have safety concerns.

The Consumer Product Safety Office issued a press release saying that the authorities inspected five baby rockers, five walkers and 13 toys sold on Shopee and Lazada in the first half of this year and found that 15 of them did not meet the safety standards set under the Consumer Protection (Consumer Product Safety Requirements) Regulations.

Among these samples that do not meet the standards, baby rocking chairs have small detachable parts that may cause suffocation of babies or make the rocking chairs unstable; the openings and gaps of walkers do not meet the requirements, which may cause the walkers to get stuck or tip over; reusable silicone water balls, small cubes and other toys have detachable parts or magnetic parts that may also cause suffocation or strangulation.

KK Women's and Children's Hospital receives an average of more than 10 cases of children injured in rocking chairs and walkers each year, including fractures and head injuries caused by falls, abrasions from sharp objects and second-degree burns.

In addition, the number of cases caused by toy small parts has reached an average of 46 cases per year in the past two years. In some serious cases, children swallowed small magnetic parts, causing intestinal blockage or puncture of the intestinal wall.
