Prime Minister Li issued a message on Earth Day calling for the avoidance of single-use plastics
Today (22nd) is Earth Day. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong issued a message calling on people to reduce the use of disposable plastic products. He also said that the government is also studying ways to reduce packaging waste.
Prime Minister Lee said in a Facebook post today that Earth Day was first held in the United States in 1970 and has now become a grand event for the global environmental movement.
The theme of this year's World Earth Day is "Earth and Plastic", which calls for reducing plastic waste and consumption. At the United Nations, countries are working on a legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution. The treaty is expected to be launched this year and will be an important step towards a zero-waste future.
Prime Minister Lee said that as an island nation, Singapore is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
“We are committed to building a sustainable future. Our zero waste masterplan aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill per person by 30% by 2030. Last year, we introduced a charge for single-use shopping bags and we We are also looking into ways to reduce packaging waste.”
Prime Minister Lee said: "We must all do our part to avoid single-use plastics, choose reusable alternatives and recycle e-waste. Let us protect the earth for future generations!"
